SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn: Heroes of the Underground Railroad
DESCRIPTION:Registration not required\, but encouraged. Please register for the event on Eventbrite here. \nDr. Jenny Masur will discuss her latest book\, Heroes of the Underground Railroad around Washington DC\, sharing stories of nine Maryland freedom seekers originating from a variety of counties and settling in varied destinations in the Northeast and abroad. In some ways the experiences of these men and women fit stereotypes of the Underground Railroad—Vigilance Committees\, Quakers\, crossing into Pennsylvania\, heading to the north. However\, their stories are unexpected in the key interventions of fellow African Americans\, and in the necessity of repeated flight forcing them to rebuild their lives more than once.  Hope you will join us for this important event. \nASL interpretation will be available for attendees. \nPresented in partnership with The Maryland State Archives and The Maryland Four Centuries Project. \n\nDial-In Information \n  \nPlease click the link below to join the webinar:\nhttps://marylandlibraries.zoom.us/j/91826279359?pwd=eloxQnprVHpVRGtkbjBSVVBkMjhmZz09\nPasscode: 271807\nOr One tap mobile :\nUS: +13017158592\,\,91826279359#\,\,\,\,*271807#  or +13126266799\,\,91826279359#\,\,\,\,*271807#\nOr Telephone:\nDial(for higher quality\, dial a number based on your current location):\nUS: +1 301 715 8592  or +1 312 626 6799  or +1 470 250 9358  or +1 470 381 2552  or +1 646 518 9805  or +1 646 558 8656  or +1 651 372 8299  or +1 786 635 1003  or +1 267 831 0333  or +1 253 215 8782  or +1 346 248 7799  or +1 602 753 0140  or +1 669 219 2599  or +1 669 900 9128  or +1 720 928 9299  or +1 971 247 1195  or +1 213 338 8477\nWebinar ID: 918 2627 9359\nPasscode: 271807\nInternational numbers available: https://marylandlibraries.zoom.us/u/aZ9fVB5cL \nThe presentation will also be broadcast on the Enoch Pratt Free Library Facebook page. SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn: Maryland’s Artistic Property\, Highlights & Recent Acquisitions
DESCRIPTION:Registration encouraged. Check the Enoch Pratt Free Library website for the Eventbrite link. ASL interpretation will be available for attendees. \nThe state of Maryland is fortunate to have one of the most historic collections of state-owned art in the nation. It dates from 1774 when the portrait of William Pitt\, Earl of Chatham was presented to the state by Charles Willson Peale. Since 1969\, with the creation of the Commission on Artistic Property\, the collection has been overseen by the Archives. The collection includes paintings\, sculptures\, decorative arts\, and works on paper dating from the thirteenth century to the present and is rich in portraiture of Maryland governors\, legislators\, and first ladies. Many of these works of art are displayed in the Maryland State House\, Government House\, and other legislative buildings throughout the Annapolis complex. The Peabody Art Collection\, acquired by the state in 1996\, added additional works by renowned artists. \nRecent acquisitions help expand the breadth of the collection in terms of date range and diversity\, as well as historic treasures received as gifts. Recent conservation projects have allowed for the display of things that haven’t been seen by the public in decades. \nCatherine Rogers Arthur\, Senior Curator Director of Artistic Property\, will present Marylands Artistic Property\, Highlights Recent Acquisitions an illustrated lecture; a virtual tour of Marylands Treasures of State. \nImage citation: Shaft of Corot\, oil on paper\, David Brewster\, 2016. MSA SC 1545-3489\, gift of the artist. \nPresented in partnership with The Maryland State Archives and The Maryland Four Centuries Project.

Lewis Museum. \nTamara Winfrey Harris will be in conversation about her new book\, Dear Black Girl. \nMore than a year ago\, author Tamara Winfrey Harris asked a few Black women on social media to write 12 honest\, open\, and inspiring letters of support to young Black girls in a workshop aged thirteen to twenty-one to. She asked them to write letters that were loving\, truthful\, vulnerable\, feminist\, anti-racist\, body positive\, LGBTQ+ positive\, anti–respectability politics\, and pro–Black girl. Instead of twelve letters\, she received more than fifty from all over the world. And she continues to receive them. On scented paper. Through the internet. Shoved into her hands in Starbucks. Neatly printed on notebook paper. Typed. Scrawled in elegant swirls. In hand-decorated envelopes. These letters are the basis of Harris’ Dear Black Girl: Letters from Your Sisters on Stepping into Your Power. \nIn Dear Black Girl\, Winfrey-Harris introduces and organizes a selection of these letters\, modeling how black women can nurture future generations. Each chapter ends with a prompt encouraging girls to write a letter to themselves\, teaching the art of self-love and self-nurturing. \nASL interpretation will be available to attendees. \nVisit https://www.theivybookshop.com/ to order your copies of Dear Black Girl. \nThe Brown Lecture Series is supported by the Eddie C. and C.
