DESCRIPTION:Promoting Deaf Culture and ASL: One of the primary goals is to celebrate and promote Deaf culture and ASL. By hosting trivia in ASL\, the organization supports the use and recognition of ASL as a rich\, fully-fledged language and an integral part of Deaf culture. \nCreating Inclusive Social Opportunities: These events provide inclusive social settings where Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals can participate fully without communication barriers. They also offer hearing individuals an opportunity to engage with Deaf culture and learn ASL\, fostering greater understanding and inclusivity. \nEducation and Awareness: Through fun and engaging trivia\, the organization can educate participants about Deaf history\, notable figures in the Deaf community\, and important aspects of Deaf culture\, thereby raising awareness and understanding among a broader audience. \nCommunity Building: Events like ASL trivia nights are excellent for community building\, offering a space for people from the Deaf and hearing communities to come together\, interact\, and form connections in a friendly\, entertaining environment. \nSkill Development: For both Deaf and hearing participants\, these events can be a platform for developing and practicing ASL skills in a fun\, low-pressure setting\, which is beneficial for language learning\, acquisition\, and retention. \nEmpowerment and Representation: By centering events around Deaf culture and ASL\, ASL Trivia empowers the Deaf community\, giving them a platform for visibility and representation in a world where they are often marginalized.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special storytime event with Aarron Loggins\, ASL entertainer and advocate for the deaf/hard-of-hearing community. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nJoin us at the Olney Library for a special storytime event featuring Aarron Loggins. He combines storytelling and American Sign Language (ASL)\, using his hands and body to tell his stories. \nLoggins is an advocate and activist for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community\, and he has won recognition for his acting and storytelling skills. \nThis program is generously funded by the Friends of the Library\, Montgomery County. \nLibrary Program Attendance (both virtual and in the branch) is limited to participants within the suggested age range of the program. Desus & Mero turned their Bronx-born friendship into a growing brand starting with their podcast\, The Bodega Boys\, which helped them amass an enthusiastic following for their smart and comedic off-the-cuff musings on topics including pop culture\, politics\, sports\, music\, and everything in between. The duo stars in Showtime’s first ever weekly late-night talk show\, Desus & Mero\, which is currently airing its third season of noteworthy guests and memorable conversations. Please check back for Eventbrite registration. \nThibault Manekin will be in conversation with John Brothers about his life and work. \nFrom the time he was little growing in Baltimore City\, Thibault Manekin wrestled to understand why we as human beings seemed so divided. In 2002\, Thibault traveled to South Africa\, where he combined his passion for bringing people together with a love of sports to help create Peace Players\, a nonprofit with the mission of bringing together children from war-torn countries around the world through basketball and dialogue. In 2006\, Thibault moved back to Baltimore where he helped start Seawall\, an impact driven company made up of passionate social entrepreneurs who believe in re-imagining the real estate industry as we know it. \nIn 2020\, fascinated by the lessons he learned over the years\, Thibault launched the Larger Than Yourself podcast\, a collaborative space for brave people to share how they are helping small ideas become powerful movements. The mission is to amplify the impact of their stories and inspire the courage in others to reimagine industries\, lead with purpose\, and challenge the status quo. In November of 2021\, Thibault’s released his first book\, Larger Than Yourself. \nJohn Brothers currently serves as the President of the T. Rowe Price Foundation and President of T. Rowe Price Charitable. Dr. Brothers comes to T. Please check back for the Eventbrite registration. \nJoin award-winning food and nutrition journalist Toni Tipton-Martin for a virtual event celebrating her life and work. \nToni Tipton-Martin is a culinary journalist and author using cultural heritage and cooking  to build community. She is Editor in Chief of Cook’s Country by America’s Test Kitchen\, a PBS  television show host\, a two-time James Beard Award winner for her books on African American  cooking\, and she recently was awarded the prestigious Julia Child Award\, which is given to an  individual (or team) who has made a profound and significant difference in the way America  cooks\, eats and drinks. \nToni’s latest book\, Jubilee: Recipes From Two Centuries of African American Cooking\,  brings to life 125 dishes from the African American cookbooks in her rare collection through  breath-taking photography and engaging storytelling.
